THE BRAKES MCR - THEM'S THE BRAKES E.P.
Fantastic six track e.p. from this Manchester indie rock outfit.some really great original tunes on here backed up by incredible talent.A bit different from your usual indie band, tunes range from melodic to outright rock n roll and everything inbetween. The Brakes boast not one but two lead singer/guitarists,the vocal side is used to good effect and the dual lead guitars are outstanding.track 1 'Allforgotten starts off gently enough all spangly guitar and hushed echoing vocals but soon turns into a great singalong indie anthem, powerful drums carried along with an energetic guitar break,a live favourite i,m sure.track 2 ,Wizard's Sleeve' begins with the most wicked bass line you're likely to hear.stunning.and then the rest of the band come in and the track gets better and better.vocals are immense, guitar and drum perfection.the lead breaks are just pure class.top track this.get on it. Track 3 takes the pace down a notch or two, possibly the standout track on the e.p.great intro leads into a soulful melancholic vocal.strong lyrically and quite moving.vocals get stronger with a feeling of desperation and longing as the song progress before the string part really lifts it to another level.Very powerful and just gorgeous,a song to be proud of.4 'Down to you' is one of two tracks that clock in at a very healthy 7 minutes long.dual lead vocals working well on this track.angry, edgy vocals over a sweet rolling drum beat while the length of the track lets the lead breaks really come into their own, awesome! I can just imagine get lost in this if i saw these guys playing it live somewhere.Track 5 'Ode to Jane' is a bit more commercial.bouncing along and with a fine singalong chorus.once more the lead guitar solo blows you away.Last track 'It's my city' is the bands tribute to that wonderful place that is Manchester.the second 7 minute track.great guitar to start, dual vocals alternating this time as the lads tell you all about 'their city' and all its delights.it soon turns into a proper indie romp, all heavy bluesy guitar, crashing drums and manc swagger. No other city on earth churns out more top class bands and musicians.thank fuck for MCR is all i can say.the track turns into something like a jam session at the end and i could imagine it being played live and going on for an age,the band just sparking off each other
All in all,one excellent e.p.class and energy running through every track.if you've not heard them yet make sure you find The Brakes mcr.you'll be glad you did.madferret.
